• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

A great way to create a vivid world for a story is to find and use the “right” details. How do I figure out details that are memorable and specific instead of generic and bland?

Kate Elliot, author of over 26 novels, will present a virtual workshop on world building, focusing on how to use our characters' interactions with the stuff of their world to make that world real and vibrant.

Hosted by SpecFicNZ, this workshop is one of a series of virtual writing workshops we're running this year. Workshops are free to SpecFicNZ members, and only NZ$10 for non-members. A great deal, whether you're a member or not. Although the workshops are geared primarily toward our membership (speculative fiction writers in New Zealand), they're applicable to writers of many genres from anywhere in the world. Workshops are held on Zoom, and we welcome everyone, no matter where you live.

Kate's workshop will be held on Sunday 11 July 4-6 pm NZT
