• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Typing vs writing longhand

That sounds perfect for a love letter or even a thank you note, but my writing is such a back and forth and round and round effort that it would be a waste of a lovely paper - and hideously expensive to write a whole book.

There is that downside - I use up about 10 full notebooks/legal pads for 80-90k words, which can add up quick if you're using quality paper. I look at it as entertainment budget - I don't spend on much else but books and writing related accoutrement, and I buy good notebooks in bundles and sales whenever I can find them. A good fountain pen will last for years with care, and ink is cheap if you find the right vendor.

Got to feed my vice, right? ;)

On the commercial writing side, I know several people who use Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Does anyone use it or similar?

It wouldn't work for me.
My husband's best friends uses it fit everything he does on the computer, and he seems to like it pretty well. Be warned: I don't think they work on a Mac.
