• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

I stumbled across this forum yesterday and what a little (read: big) gold mine! I am an Australian-born, New Zealand-based writer with a background in content writing and marketing in the education and business sectors.

In my free time, I write speculative fiction. While I've been known to dabble in short stories (with varying degrees of success), my creative writing tends to take on more long-form prose. Currently, I'm working on the first novel of an epic fantasy series.

Here's to hoping that this community will be a source of inspiration and motivation to keep putting one word down after another :)

Very warm welcome :) One of our longstanding members is a fellow Kiwi, and sometimes even manages to join us for Pop-Ups, even tho it's something like 6am your time!

Welcome, Nmlee! I am a reading/ literacy specialist here in the US, and we are always impressed with the world of literacy in NZ! Good luck with your writing! As you put it, one word after another!

Welcome from a fellow Kiwi! Where are you based? Are you a member of SpecFic NZ? Great group of folks to connect with, if you're not already. I'm south of Christchurch. As @AgentPete says, sometimes I get to Pop Ups, though I haven't been there lately--too much real life going on, and the Pop Up time is some of my most productive writing time, so I've been loath to give it up.

Hello fellow Kiwi! I'm based in Auckland and am a subscriber to Spec Fic NZ's newsletters and Facebook page. In the short time I've followed them, I've seen some great things come through.

I had a client, the late lamented Mal Peet, who did a writer in residency in Auckland, and loved every minute of it. Very creative culture, he told me. Plus, you still apparently have book shops :)

Yes! My NZ editor became a dear friend...they are so ahead of us in literacy--and they HAVE BOOKSHOPS! Lots of poetry, too. Welcome!
