• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Hi all,

I hope everyone is well! I'm new to this whole literary scene. I'm currently writing a memoir which covers addiction and the recovery of it. It covers dark subjects including some of the trauma I had suffered in my twenties, which consequently lead me to seek solace in escape and my addiction. I'm here because I have no experience in writing whatsoever and am keen to seek advice, and potentially critique of my work so far.

I come from a working class back ground in the North-East of England and with no writing experience to speak of

I look forward to speaking with some of you and am hopeful to improve on my writing.

James :D

Hi James,

Welcome to Litopia. I hope you're finding your way around.

I too am working class by background, from the Northwest and back here now, but I lived in Durham for several years, so I know the Northeast well.

It might feel daunting as a new writer, especially sharing something as personal as memoir, but I hope you'll find the Litopia Lab a safe and nurturing space to give and receive critiques. Any questions, just ask.

Rachel :)

Welcome aboard :)

Memoir is a good space to introduce yourself to writing. It's easier for the words and pain to flow. Just remember to ask. What will make my reader care? You're aiming for around 70K words.

Good luck!
xx Rachel
