Maybe that's a US thing? Like a logline, teaser, or cold open with television. Something to capture the reader's interest quickly.

Kidney stone, again. She has the award for most often produced and biggest stones. 14mm was the biggest a couple of years back. One 7mm this time blocking a kidney so they put in a stint to bypass it and drain the kidney. Have to wait for the infection can clear before they can blast the stone to break it up.
