My mother used to mutter darkly, usually at some poor checkout assistant who'd called her 'dear', "When folk see wrinkles on your face, they think you've got nothing in your head."

But then she didn't look like an ageing top model.
 
I get called Madam. Makes me want to punch someone.

When I first moved into my flat (wasn't even 60 then) a service guy came round to do some work. He genuinely asked me if I wanted him to take down the cord of the power tool he was using.
I genuinely asked him if he'd like a smack.
(And this would have been a great story for him if I'd subsequently fallen over, but I bloody well didn't, the little shit.)
